２０００年９月１７日の夜明け前の時間、アトランティスはアメリカのハートランド上空を通過していた。スペースシャトルがイリノイ州シカゴ上空に進んだ時、尋常でないオブジェクトが飛んでいるのが見られた。それはスピードを持って飛んでおり、飛行士はペイロード（貨物室）のカメラのズームインの操作をして、物体がそれ以上遠くで単に見えなくなるまで、このオブジェクトの進路を追いかけた。これは何であろうか？ヒューストンの関係者は何故それを調査しないのか？ビデオテープからの静止画像を見てみよう。


  In the predawn hours of 17 September 2000, Atlantis was passing over America's Heartland.  Just as the Shuttle was heading over Chicago Illinois, an unusual object was seen flying below.  It moved with some speed, and the person controlling the payload bay camera took steps to zoom in, and follow the progress of this object until it was simply too far afield to see anymore.  What was this thing?  Why did the people in Houston take pains to investigate it?.  Let's take a look at some still shots from the video tape.

シカゴは,右手の明るい斑点である。

Here we can see our object.  The arrow denotes the direction of travel.  Chicago is the bright patch of lights to the right.







Ｂオブジェクトは輝いている。ズームしてかなり拡大している。もしそれが通常の氷なら,何故ＮＡＳＡがそれを追跡するのだろうか。

The object has brightened.  We are zoomed in to high magnification.  One wonders why NASA would track a piece of ordinary ice, IF that's what this is.







Ｃ今シカゴ上空を通過しようとしている。この明確な動きをどなたがご覧になっているのでしょうか、彼らはそれを見たのでしょうか。

Now closer to passing directly over Chicago.  Had someone been looking up at this precise moment, could they have seen it?







Ｄ尚、市街地の上空を進んでいる。ミシガン湖の海岸線（湖岸線）は右手の奥にある。

Still heading over the city.  The shoreline of Lake Michigan can be made out to the right.







Ｅこの画像ではオブジェクトは明るい街のあかりにとけ込んでいる。同じコースで進んでいる。

The object is almost merging with the bright city lights in this shot.  Still making the same course.







Ｆ今、オブジェクトはシカゴ上空を通過しており、湖の上空を進んでいる。


The object has now passed over Chicago, and is heading out over the Lake.  Oh to have been on a boat off Chicago that morning, perhaps with a pair of binoculars!






Ｇさて、今大きな街を通過して、このオブジェクトは視野から消えつつある。

Well past the big city now, we are about to lose sight of this object.







Ｈ異常物体の最後の画像である。ほとんどそれが視野から消えた時に、ライブ放送は中断した。

Our last view of the anomaly.  Almost as soon as it passed from the field of view, the live feed was cut off.







Ｉこれがライブ受信が中断した時の画像である。お分かりのようにアトランティスの移動足跡は、シカゴを横断していて、今セントローレンスを海の方へ進んでいる。

When the live downlink was discontinued, this is what we were given.  As can be seen, Atlantis' track had carried her straight across Chicago.  In this view, she is now heading across the St. Lawrence seaway.
