２０００年５月２３日、まだひな鳥状態のＩＳＳへの供給と組立ての作業が速やかに進んでいた。皆がその進行に満足していた。ＳＴＳ-101の宇宙飛行士は彼らの任務を忙しくこなしていたが、別の事態が外では起きていた。

夜明け前の、夜の間にシャトルはメキシコ湾とアメリカ南部の州、ルイジアナの一部の上空を通過していた。ペイロードベイ（貨物室）のカメラはアクティブ（使用中）で、海に反射する美しい月を写していた。突然、尋常でないことが起きた。非常に明るく輝くオブジェクトが大気圏上方に現れ、脈動し、シャトルとステーションの複合体に接近していくように見えた。そのオブジェクトはさらに輝きを増し、さらに接近していた。何か尋常でないものが視界に入ってきた時にとるＮＡＳＡのいつもの習慣なのであるが、このオブジェクトがさらに接近した時に、ライブの放送が突然カットされた。シャトルの右上にオブジェクトが接近するのを見るのは興味深い。画面の左から右へ、遠くの２つのオブジェクトが通過しており、さらに３個の小さいオブジェクトが画面の下方を通過していくのが見えた。

On 23 May 2000, the supply and assembly work aboard the fledglingInternational Space Staion was proceeding apace. Everyone was satisfied with the progress. As the space travellers ofSTS-101 were busily performing their duties, other things were taking place outside.

During a night time pass, just before dawn, the Shuttle was passing over the Gulf of Mexico and the Southern States, particularly Louisiana. The payload bay camera was active, providing a beautiful scene of the Moon reflecting off the sea. Suddenly, unusual things started to happen. A VERY bright object appeared above the atmosphere, pulsating, and seeming to approach the Shuttle/Station Complex. The object continued to get brighter and brighter, and appeared to come closer. As this aparition came closer, the live downlink was cut suddenly, as is NASA's wont when something unusual comes into the field of view. It would have been interesting to see if the object came right up to the Shuttle. There were also two more distant objects seen crossing left to right at the top of the screen, and three small objects passing across the lower right screen.

数秒後、背景の地上の市街の灯りがシャトルとの関係で変化している。
Moments have passed, and the city lights in the background have changed position relative to the Shuttle.

さらに時間が経過し、オブジェクトは脈動のサイクルにおいて薄暗くなった。

More time has passed, and the object is dimmed in it's pulsation cycle.

さらに時間が経過し、再び、不可思議なオブジェクトはもっと輝きを増した。

As time continues to goes by, the anomaly has gotten much brighter again.

そのオブジェクトはその脈動のサイクルの中で再び薄暗くなった。それが接近するにつれ、皿型の形になり始めた。

Our objects has dimmed again in it's cycle of pulses. Note that as it gets closer, it has begun to take on a disc like shape.

オブジェクトがシャトルに接近した時、ＮＡＳＡはペイロードベイカメラのレンズを閉じはじめた。

As the thing nears the Shuttle, NASA have begun to close the iris on the payload bay camer

そのオブジェクトは再び輝いている。脈動のサイクルは１秒間に１回だ。

The object is brightening again. The pulse cycle was about once per second.

ＮＡＳＡはライブ放送の供給をカットし、軌道追尾動画に切り替えた。我々は一連の結果として、シャトルがルイジアナ州の上空に位置しているのが分かる。

NASA cut the live feed, and went to the animated orbital tracker. We can see the Shuttle is over the State of Louisiana as the sequence ends.
